Cool green lawn rolls forever at the Summer of Soul. 100-year-old trees throw a glorious canopy of dappled sunshade over your picnic rug. You can see the stage from here. You can hear every note. If you were expecting the usual summer music festival panic, welcome to another green world.

The Meltdown

The Sugarcanes

Do Yo Thangs

That Gold St Sound

Summer of Soul has been the stress-free family alternative to the regular music festival heatwave since 2012. The spectacular leafy amphitheatre of Mossvale Park, two hours east of Melbourne near the Gippsland coast, is an open secret for lovers of soulful music who prefer good food, local brews and a relaxed circle of deckchairs to the frenzied multi-stage stampede.

Felix Riebl (The Cat Empire) will return, this time with a new band to present his latest album, Paper Doors. From Boston, Massachusetts comes the jazz-pop-acoustic collision of Lake Street Dive, and from Mali, Summer of Soul welcomes an old friend, guitar giant Vieux Farka Toure.

Gates open at noon, music kicks off at 2pm and will roll through to 10.45pm. This year’s blues-soul sojourn also features Melbourne’s latest rising soul ensemble The Meltdown, dreamy synth duo GL, horn-studded quintet The Sugarcanes, Rhythm & Blues inspired tunes of The Do Yo Thangs and the Motown-skewed funk of That Gold Street Sound.

One stage. Great sound. BYO food and beverages (no glass please), or else select from a dazzling array of local food, wine, beer and craft stalls.

Parking is free, or buy a ticket on the buses from Inverloch or Phillip Island.
