Friday 20th October: Justin Townes Earle

JUSTIN TOWNES EARLE | MEENIYAN TOWN HALL  Fri 20th October 8pm

Recent new father of both a new album and a daughter, JTE has been absent from his favourite country for a few years now. It will be a treat to have him back on the big stage with a full band, new and old tunes and the same hammer down guitar pickin’ goodness he possesses.

Since launching his recording career a decade ago, Justin Townes Earle has established a reputation as a singular leading light in the Americana music community. With fearless, personally charged lyrical insight and infectious melodic craftsmanship, the young veteran singer-songwriter has built a rich, personally charged body of work.

Now, on his seventh album (and New West debut) Kids in the Street, Justin Townes Earle raises the creative and personal stakes to deliver a deeply soulful set that’s both emotionally riveting and effortlessly uplifting. Taking himself out of his creative comfort zone and assembling a new set of collaborators, Earle has created one of his most potent efforts to date, reflecting all manner of new influences upon his life and his art.

“Life has changed a lot for me in the last few years,” Earle reflects. “I got married and am getting ready to become a father, and this is the first record that I’ve written since I’ve been married. There’s definitely an uplifting aspect to this record in a lot of ways, because I’m feeling pretty positive.

Friday 24th November: The Audreys

THE AUDREYS – “Between Last Night & Us Tour”|  Friday 24th November. 2017.  8pm

THE AUDREYS – “Between Last Night & Us Tour”

Exciting news from Audreys HQ folks! To celebrate the 11th anniversary of our debut album, Between Last Night & Us, we are hitting the road to play it for you in person. Note: we would’ve done this last year on the more momentous 10th anniversary, but Tristan was drunk in a bar somewhere and Taasha was running around America trying to bag a cowboy, so we’re a year late. Anyway, you’ll hear the album in its entirety (and by the way we KNOW it’s your favourite) plus all the hits from the other records. And as an extra special treat you can expect some original members from the recording session to make an appearance. Pretty cool huh? See you at the shows….T&T

Joe Pug & Courtney Marie Andrews

MEENIYAN TOWN HALL  Saturday 15th July 2017. Doors 7pm. Show 8pm

Joe Pug & Courtney Marie Andrews

Chicago born and raised Joe Pug is no stranger to this part of the world and makes a welcome return to headline shows after coming down for 2016’s Out On the Weekend festival. His third and critically acclaimed album Windfall, a 10-song indie-folk gem that has cemented his reputation as one of America’s most respected young songwriters, was met with high praise with The Australian describing it as “absolutely brilliant.” As Paste Magazine commented, “Windfall is an album about not just the broken moments and uphill climbs that shape life, but how to exist in those moments, how to draw on core strengths and adapt, how to live through it all and come out stronger.” We all agreed and you will hear tunes from this, his back catalogue and new tunes and covers come July.

Touring with Joe will be Courtney Marie Andrews. At just 16 years old, Andrews left home in Arizona for her first tour. Travelling up and down the West Coast of the USA, busking and playing anywhere that would have her. Soon after, she took a Greyhound bus four nights straight from Phoenix to New York to do the same on the East Coast. For a decade or so since, Courtney’s been a session and backup singer and guitarist for nearly 40 artists, including Damien Jurado. She never stopped writing her own material, though. Picking up admirers like Jurado and Ryan Adams along the way, she has quietly earned a reputation as a songwriter’s songwriter. Her 2016 album release ‘Honest Life’ has been praised by media universally with the UK’s Daily Telegraph saying “the poetic economy of her lyrics is right up there with such masters of the country vignette as Guy Clark and John Prine…a truly substantial talent.” That’s some big associations right there.

Joe Pug and Courtney Marie Andrews. Two sensational talents gracing the one stage for a great night of music and discovery. Don’t miss them this July.

Beth Orton

MEENIYAN TOWN HALL  Saturday 10th June, 2017. Doors 7pm. Show 8pm

Beth Orton | support Vorhees   **sold out**

English Brit award winning singer-songwriter Beth Orton today announces that she will play dates around the country this June, adding to her already announced appearance at the Sydney Opera House (Vivid Live festival).

Last in Australia in 2013 for the Heavenly Sounds tour, Orton is well known for her mesmerising on-stage presence and powerfully emotive vocals. Consequence Of Sound wrote of Orton’s “… intensely heartfelt vocals and ever assured guitar…” at a recent London show, continuing that “Orton’s vocal at times recalled the melisma of Joni Mitchell and the purity of Sandy Denny”.

Orton will perform with a full band for the first time in Australia in many years playing songs spanning her celebrated career from Trailer Park, Central Reservation, Daybreaker, Comfort of Strangers and Sugaring Season to her 2016 album Kidsticks, which was co-written and co-produced in LA with Fuck Buttons’ Andrew Hung. The album received rave reviews from tastemakers around the world, with the UK’s Guardian describing the album as a “joyously abandoned swirl of words and sounds”, while Clash Magazine said, “it is an album marking out its own territory rather than trying to conform to expectations.”

“Her 20 years of folk-electro oscillations find an experimental middle ground here, between breathy vocal rounds and abstract electronic grooves”, said Rolling Stone Australia.

WATCH Beth’s NPR Tiny Desk Concert here, and live performance of Moon on WFUV here

Don’t miss your chance to experience this incredible performer when she returns to our shores in June.

Sweet Creeps & Outlaws

MEENIYAN TOWN HALL Friday 21st April 2017. Doors 7pm. Show 8pm

Henry Wagons, Jonny Fritz & Ruby Boots

The Sweet Creeps & Outlaws Tour featuring Henry Wagons, Jonny Fritz and Ruby Boots. A special trio of artists performing in what will be a very special show. Playing their own songs, each others songs, other people songs and more stories than a Ted Egan campfire session, Sweet Creeps & Outlaws is a musical treat and good time not to be missed.

Henry Wagons is a true renaissance man, with a unique swagger reminiscent of a day when front men gave back bucket loads of charm and were shrouded in enigmatic mystery. Drawing on a broad-ranging swag of influences, Henry’s show is a high sensation roller coaster ride that ranges from the bluster of sweaty jumpsuit era Elvis, post karate kicks, to the sombre, drunken malaise of Lee Hazlewood. He can touch on the tenderness of a recently heart-broken Roy Orbison while simultaneously embracing the menace of Nick Cave.

Jonny Fritz makes a welcome return for the first time since 2015. When last we met our hero, Jonny had just wrapped up the purgative classic, Dad Country, his call to the rising generation for a renewed lyricism in country music, recorded in Jackson Browne’s personal recording studio and released by ATO Records. Now in his newest, Sweet Creep, which features Joshua Hedley and Dawes’ Taylor and Griffin Goldsmith, the lyricism returns, but with a wide hopeful grin. Recorded in Jim James’ makeshift hilltop studio in Montecito Heights, where golden twilight fills up thirsty grass valleys, Sweet Creep reverberates with the same feeling of sunny new vistas. Joining Jonny on this trip will be old time side kick and fiddler, Joshua Hedley.

Ruby Boots’ music will stop you in your tracks. The rising Australian star, now based in Nashville TN, possesses a red wine-stained soulful voice that crackles with swagger and sorrow. Her fiercely honest lyrics strike deep into your heart while her music delivers an alluring mix of Americana, Rock, Folk and Blues. Leaving home at a young age, to work on pearling boats, is where she found the distance, space and time needed to hone her songwriting skills. The result was her debut album Solitude which has been hailed as a landmark Australian release. The Music said, “There’s maturity and intelligence here in spades and the production is of the highest order … It’s the ups and downs of real life live encapsulated in song and Ruby Boots has captured that and more on her world class debut.”

Tony Joe White

MEENIYAN TOWN HALL  Saturday 15th April 2017 **SOLD OUT**

TONY JOE WHITE

THE SWAMP FOX AND BLUES ICON

TONY JOE WHITE

RETURNS TO AUSTRALIA IN APRIL 2017

The Swamp Fox, Tony Joe White, is to put it simply a bona legend of the music game and at the age of 73 he just keeps getting better. We are pleased to announce his return to Australia in April 2017.

Tony Joe White was literally born for the blues, the part-Cherokee musician being brought up as part of a big brood on a cotton farm in Louisiana, raised on a diet of Lightnin’ Hopkins and local bluesmen, an upbringing reflected to this day in his evocative, haunting music and adding a veneer of authenticity to everything that he touches.

Gems like “Polk Salad Annie” and “Rainy Night in Georgia” were just the beginning. His recording career has now spanned parts of six different decades and spawned well over 20 albums with his songs recorded by Elvis Presley, Tina Turner, Ray Charles, Roy Orbison, Dusty Springfield, Tom Jones and Etta James. He has worked in the studio or on stage with list of artists that would make your head spin – Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins, The MGs, Eric Clapton, JJ Cale, Waylon Jennings, Lucinda Williams and Emmylou Harris and recently appeared with the Foo Fighters on Letterman as they performed Polk Salad Annie which prompted host David Letterman to say If I was this guy, you could all kiss my ass.” Fair call.

TJW is not one to sit still, and he’s still as relevant as he ever was with the release of his latest album, Rain Crow.  American Songwriter magazine gave it 4 from 5 star review and said “Rain Crow is yet another stunning example that Tony Joe White’s uncompromising, often ominous vision, shows no signs of diminishing.”

So whether you’ve been with White for the duration or are a newcomer to his incredible music it matters not – come along and join the festivities when the legend that is Tony Joe White hits Australia in 2017.

Kurt Vile

MEENIYAN TOWN HALL Sunday 5th March 2017. Doors 6pm. Show 7pm

Kurt Vile  **Sold Out**

Support: Jess Ribeiro

Mistletone very proudly presents Kurt Vile, stopping by Meeniyan as part of his supreme solo tour.

Since releasing his debut solo album Constant Hitmaker in 2008, Kurt Vile has ascended to an elevated stature as one of the most accomplished and charismatic songwriters of our time. A firm favourite with Australian audiences, KV has packed out rooms across Australia (including Sydney Opera House earlier this year, with his band The Violators).

Kurt’s latest album b’lieve i’m goin down…, released last year via Matador / Remote Control, won universal acclaim; The AV Club called “the purest distillation of Vile’s idiosyncratic style to date”, and Pitchfork bestowed it Best New Music, noting: “Kurt Vile has a persona, and you know him by now: He is the weird quiet kid in the corner, the one who seems at first lost in his own world and disconnected from everything around him, but turns out to be smart, observant, and low-key hilarious. So while his albums draw you in with the vibe—the impeccably recorded and mixed songs that shuffle bits of folk, new wave, or country in the mix but are always squarely down-the-middle rock—you return to them for their human qualities, the way they offer a manner of seeing the world, a glimpse at a perspective that feels both voyeuristic and easy to connect to your own life.”

Last year, Kurt told Rolling Stone that he wanted b’lieve i’m goin down… “to sound like it’s on my couch”, citing Neil Young’s After the Gold Rush as a reference point. “Not in a lo-fi way,” he explained, “just more unguarded and vulnerable. I wanted it to feel like I was on a couch in a familiar living room even if I was somewhere else. To me, it’s sort of that home vibe that I had to capture somehow…to make it sound like it was played there in the room.”

This intimate and immediate power that Kurt Vile’s songs possess is one of the qualities that KV fans hold dear to their hearts, and it will be in generous supply on this rare and auspicious occasion of a Kurt Vile solo tour.

• “The music is quiet and the melody, like a hymn, folds in on itself, and embraces full strength in a sexy, floating forcelessness that slowly gathers into a wave that doesn’t go where you think it will” – KIM GORDON

• “The former forklift driver is now one of the most adored artists around. He has a canon of cool songs: feelgood, insightful, reflective, comforting, jubilant tunes. It’s been a slow burn, but he hasn’t put a foot wrong – he’s one of only a few that you’d trust to still be making cool music decades from now. Give Kurt Vile’s music some little chunks of your life and you will be rewarded. Handsomely” – AUNTY MEREDITH

VIEUX FARKA TOURE

Often referred to as The Hendrix of the Sahara, Vieux is the son of legendary Malian guitarist Ali Farka Toure. Ali came from a tribe of soldiers, historically, and defied his parents to become a musician. History repeated when Vieux declared that he also wanted to be a musician – and with help from family friend, the kora maestro Toumani Diabate, Vieux eventually convinced his father to give him his blessing shortly before Ali passed.
